USE 1: Actions happening at specific time in the Past.
(Hành động xảy ra ở thời điểm xác định rõ ràng trong quá khứ)
eg:
Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner.
Yesterday at this time, I was working in my office.
USE 2: Interrupted Action in the Past.
(Một hành động bị cắt ngang trong quá khứ)
eg:
I was watching TV when she called.
While we were having the picnic, it started to rain.
USE 3: Parallel Actions in the Past
(Các hành động cùng đang xảy ra trong quá khứ)
eg:
I was studying while he was making dinner.
While Ellen was reading, Tim was watching television.
What were you doing while you were waiting?
They were eating dinner, discussing their plans, and having a good time.
** NOTE: WHEN and WHILE
"when" in most often followed by the verb tense Simple Past, whereas "while" is usually followed by Past Continuous. "While" expresses the idea of "during that time."
